Knights Follow Weather over
Weekend – Cool Off in Sonoma, Get Hot in Chico
Sacramento – July 16, 2005
The trip to Sonoma on Friday brought mixed blessings. Although
the temperature there dropped many degrees lower than Sacramento’s hundred-plus,
the Knights unfortunately dropped a match to Sonoma along with a chance to win
the League title outright. In a very physical game, the Sol hit hard and early
drawing a questionable penalty kick against Sacramento in the 13th minute. After
converting the kick, Sacramento allowed no other goals by Sonoma. The officials
cautioned two Knights players and two Sol players during the night. Sacramento
players Lupercio and Chimienti received hard tackles from the Sonoma ranks and
Coach Preble rested them on Saturday.
Conversely, in Chico, with temperatures well above 100 degrees,
the Knights literally heated up their game. The Knights absorbed the Chico
attack and generated good possession and ball circulation. On an attempt to move
the ball out their defensive end, the Rooks dealt with the Knight’s pressure
when the Knights’ striker, Martin Sims, battling for a ball on the right side,
broke through the Chico defense and slotted a daisy-cutter towards the top of
the box. In anticipation of the pass, midfielder Marco Ramirez deftly received
the ball and flicked it to the far post area where unmarked Sean Buchanan,
brought down the rock and slotted in a near post ground shot for the team’s
first goal in the 40th minute.
Finding new confidence, the Knights extended their lead in the
89th minute of the second half with Buchanan again in great position around the
goal to receive an aerial cross from Scott Lucky. Buchanan touched the ball once
for control then using the outside of his foot, he chip-flicked it over the
keeper into the net.
When asked what he thought of the weekend’s results, Coach
Preble stated, “Obviously, Friday was disappointing, but we finished the weekend
strong with a victory at Chico keeping the team optimism high. Now the players
need to train and play this week to cinch the number one seed at the midweek
match in Salinas. We look forward to the challenge.”
The Knights will be hosting a playoff match in Sacramento on
Saturday, July 23 at 5:30 pm at an alternate location, CSU Sacramento, Soccer
Field. Please note the 5:30 start time to utilize daylight at the unlighted
complex.

Las Vegas and Albuquerque
July 8 and 9, 2005
High Flying Knights Take Two on Road: For the Diehard fans, Knights did not disappoint!
The Knights shook off travel-weary legs in Las Vegas and Albuquerque to garner back-to-back wins,
much to the delight of a small, loud and loyal group of fans!
Taking no gambles in Las Vegas, Coach Ron Preble started the lineup that earned the Knights the
last few wins. A key role player, Marco Ramirez generated early pressure on the Strikers and forced
a broken play resulting in Sean Buchanan coming up with the ball. Buchanan took a touch and then
with the top of his left foot, he bent a hard pass to sprinting Anthony Chimienti who was sliding
to the right of the defense. On a dead run, Chimienti brought the ball down, forced the keeper to
commit early at the top of the box, and slotted it right past him for an 11th minute goal. The Strikers
continued to battle back and the game quickly turned physical. However, as if to make a stern statement,
Chimienti stayed alert and got on the receiving end of a ball tipped by Buchanan off a throw-in from
Utodi Madu that the Vegas defense totally misjudged. Chimienti ran in behind the D, nodded it once to himself,
touched it true, shook ‘em and shot into the back of the net. Four cautions were issued in the first half alone.
One unfortunate foul occurred in the longest minute of extra time that resulted in Las Vegas being awarded a penalty kick.
In quite an unusual method, Keeper Mark Torguson took his position on the goal line and when the Vegas player shot,
Torg made a brilliant kick save after diving to his right.
The second half saw its share of continued rough play, with 6 more bookable offenses, resulting in the ejection of Knights’
forward, Jimmy Frazelle as well as Las Vegas players, Canarelli and Michel. All said, the Knights still had the final
word and returned with 3 points.
In cooler weather of Albuquerque, the Knights got a reprieve from the heat of Vegas, however, the altitude proved the
obstacle to overcome. Sluggish in the start of the game, the Knights let in a goal following a skirmish in front of the
net. The half ended with the Knights gaining steam. After working through altitude fatigue, the Knights turned on their
game. With the Asylum pressed high in the Knights’ end, a flighted ball got tipped out right to Martin Sims who brought
it down and broke away from the pack. Never turning back, Sims ran coast to coast and stuck it in! The bench came unglued
and were warned by the officials to remain within the designated area. Moments later with renewed enthusiasm, the Knights
got deep into the Asylum territory with Pedro Lupercio flying past all his marks. Lupercio served an incredible ball to Sims
who scored the second goal for the Knights. After a couple substitutions and fresh legs, the Knights really got busy and kept
the pressure on. The midfield nipped a ball away from the Asylum, got it to Buchanan who played it forward and got it back then
picked up yet another assist by finding Chimienti on a diagonal dime from the wide area to the middle. Chimienti faked a low shot
and chipped the onrushing keeper. And that is how it ended, Knights 3, Albuquerque 1.
Please stay tuned in to the website for details regarding the playoffs. Location, dates and times will be posted as soon as possible.

Knights Eclipse the Sol Saturday 2-1: A night of firsts for Sacramento.
First time seeing NPSL league action, Keeper Matt McDougall (Doogie) provided a stellar performance against the Sonoma
Sol’s attack. Doogie logged 5 quality saves against Sonoma’s 11 shots during the match. In another first, Midfielder Marco
Ramirez logged his first league goal when he finished a set piece in the 5th minute from Osvaldo “Ozzy” Perez. Ramirez
timed the flighted ball perfectly, arrived first, out jumped the defense, and headed the ball straight down past the keeper
and into the net. Although Sonoma’s Bussano scored before the end of the half on a skirmish in front of the Knights’
goal after a corner, the Knights continued to set the pace with their entertaining pace and quick ball circulation.
immy Frazelle capped off the night with an incredible goal in the 83rd minute when he trapped a free kick bender from
Marco Ramirez, spun away from the defender, and poked it into the far side of the goal to give the Knights the final word.
Coach Preble stated, "We didn’t have a weak link on the field tonight, all the guys came out ready and played solid."
The Knights’ defense anchored by Eliseo Lopez and flanked by Jorge Lama and Utodi Madu hardly missed a beat and covered each
other well locking out the Sol. The midfield played as a unit with Ozzy Perez and Marco Ramirez playing well off each other
and the flank play of Pedro Lupercio and Ivan Bermudez not only provided entertainment for the crowd, but proved a handful
for Sonoma.
Prior to the Knights’ match, owner JR Gholar hosted the annual Community Shield Cup, a game to determine the best soccer team
of the region’s safety agencies. Saturday’s match pitted the Sacramento County Sheriff’s against the Sacramento City Police
Department. After a fairly even start, the police scored first. However, once halftime rolled past, the Sheriff’s found a
way to out-shoot the cops and came up with three unanswered goals. The fan support for the Shield Cup was great and attributed
to the incredible support for the Knights who stepped out at 7 pm to face the league leaders, Sonoma County Sol.

Knights Dance Around Samba – team tallies a
5-2 win.
Playing at alternate location Sheldon High School,
the Knights quickly got busy in front of a large and
enthusiastic crowd. Jimmy Frazelle broke open the
Knights’ scoring in the fifth minute by breaking
free along the far post and knocking in a pass
across the face from Chimienti. A few minutes later,
Sean Buchanan followed up on a knock down –
rebounded ball off a free kick from Frazelle and put
it away with precision. Samba scored in the 26th
minute off a flukey set piece that was last touched
by a Knight. Not satisfied with a 2-1 lead, the
Knights pressured Salinas and they coughed up the
ball on a broken play with Chimienti in control to
finish the goal. In the second half, Chimienti
received a great ball from Frazelle on a set piece
and gave the Knights a 4-1 advantage.
Lights out when Ryan Rhoads, got around the corner
in the 78th minute and finished a tight angle shot
on goal. Samba tried to rally in the 80th minute and
gained one goal back; however, the evening ended
with Sacramento on top, 5-2.
The match was very physical with the referee calling
44 fouls resulting in 3 yellow card cautions issued
to each team for a total of 6 yellows.
The Knights return to Cosumnes River College on
Saturday, July 2 to face the league leaders, Sonoma
County Sol at 7 pm.

San Diego –
June 19, 2005
Knights earn four valuable points over weekend away
Knights started their road trip with a one point
result in Las Vegas. Knights arrived in Las Vegas
greeted by blustery, hot winds. The Las Vegas field,
part of a multi-field complex, offered 3 small sets
of bleachers and grass seating. Although the field
was lit, the Knights look forward to their home
field, a rarity in the last half of the season for
them.
Knights drew first blood Friday night within the 2nd
minute of play when Anthony Chimienti fed a great
ball to Sean Buchanan who lofted the ball over the
keeper for a goal. Before the end of the half, Las
Vegas equalized and the half ended 1-1. In the 65th
minute, the Knights pulled ahead when Ozzy Perez
passed the ball to Jimmy Frazelle who caught Anthony
Chimienti on the run and fed him the ball. Chimienti
put the ball away with a precision shot. The fame
was short lived, in the 70th minute, Vegas equalized
and that’s how the game ended.
Knights outshot the Strikers 21 to 13, but Knights’
keeper Torguson was well tested as the Strikers put
many of those shots on frame.
Knights ended the road trip on a high note, beating
the San Diego Pumitas 4-2. The Pumitas fell behind
after the Knights scored 3 goals in the first half.
Scoring opened with Sean Buchanan, playing out of
midfield, eluded a couple defenders after receiving
a pass from Ozzy Perez. Buchanan from distance
rocketed an incredibly bent, driven ball from the
right side, over and around the keeper, and into the
upper vector. Seven minutes later, Anthony Chimienti,
up to his usual antics, finished an incredible
throw-in from defender Utodi Madu. Five minutes
after that, Jimmy Frazelle capitalized on a
one-touch pass from Chimienti who brought down a
cross from Buchanan in front of the goal. The second
half saw a few changes in personnel and the Knights
found themselves just one goal up at the 79th minute
following a conversion of a set piece by San Diego
after a soft foul was called on the Sacramento
defense. The second SD goal occurred off a penalty
kick following a questionable foul called on
Sacramento’s defender, Ralph Cazel. From all
accounts, Cazel fought for a flighted ball, and got
his head on it for the clearance, however, he was
“submarined” by the San Diego attacker. The official
saw things differently and awarded the penalty kick
to the Pumitas. Sacramento buckled down and took
better care of the game and sealed the victory when
Zak Matteoli cut out a square ball in the back of
the SD defense, calmly went one v one on the keeper,
and finished with a left footed shot to the net.
Knights still remain in the top half of the table,
6-3-2 with 20 points, behind Salinas and Sonoma.

Knights Shake Vegas 6-2 After Slow Start
Another blustery evening at the Knights’
home field at Cosumnes River Stadium provided the
perfect setting for a solid win over the Las Vegas
Strikers. Both soccer teams are a part of the
Western Division of the National Premier Soccer
League (NPSL) formerly the MPSL, Men’s Premier
Soccer League. Coach Preble stated. “The guys were a
little flat in the beginning and after the Strikers
got their second goal and tied us, the players just
woke up and started playing harder.”
The Knights pulled ahead 2-0 in the 42nd minute
after Jimmy Frazelle scored his second goal, but the
lead was short lived with Vegas scoring immediately.
Then in the 57th minute, Vegas tied it up when their
striker, Zermeno, bumped Knights’ keeper, Mark
Torguson, as he was attempting a save on a flighted
ball. The bump was so severe, the ball bounced out
of Mark’s grip and was tapped into the goal.
Within minutes, the Knights unloaded their full fury
and continued the scoring drive with Chimienti
knocking in his rebounded shot, then by a goal by
Frazelle, and 2 more by Chimienti. Both Frazelle and
Chimienti earned hat tricks for the evening (3 goals
apiece) and Chimienti earned an assist as well.
Coach Preble summed up by stating, “After a couple
changes in personnel we got some valuable minutes
out of Marco Ramirez and Martin Sims, and the
players who came off the bench did a great job
locking down the victory.”
The Knights hit the road on June 17th and 18th with
games in Las Vegas and San Diego respectively. The
next Knights home match will be on June 25, at an
alternate location. Please check the Knights’
website for confirmation of the location for the
June 25th match.

Knights catapult into 3rd place in Western Division
with two home wins this weekend.
The Knights downed the San Diego Pumitas 3-2 and the Salinas
Valley Samba 2-0 over the weekend and gained 6 valuable
points in the process. With other teams earning draws in
their weekend matches, Sacramento vaulted from sixth to
third place, 9 points behind league leader, Sonoma, and 6
points back of 2nd place Samba.
Goals on Friday night were tallied by Anthony Chimienti (2
goals) and by Sean Buchanan (1 goal and 1 assist). The
whistle seemed to upstage the game on Friday with the
referee calling 43 total fouls, including 10 yellow cards
issued. Play improved on Saturday with the Knights showing
their usual fast paced style of circulating the ball until
the right moment and many moments came; the Knights shot on
goal 27 times in comparison to the Salinas Samba’s 15 shots.
Saturday’s goals came off the feet of Anthony Chimienti
(again!) assisted by one of the newest Knights, Marco
Ramirez, and from Martin Sims who scored directly.
The Knights next home match is June 10, Friday, versus the
Las Vegas Strikers. SEE YOU AT COSUMNES RIVER COLLEGE!

Knights fall to the Chico Rooks,
2-1, but delighted the crowd with good soccer.
“We’ve been very happy with the kind of soccer we are
playing. We created plenty of chances to score during the
run of play and haven’t given up much. We will need to clean
up our play on restarts”, said Coach Ron Preble.
The Knights’ attack was creative and very dangerous against
Chico on Friday, but it appears as thought the Knights will
need to work harder to finish all their chances. In a
thrilling attack opportunity, Sean Buchanan received the
ball on an outside, unmarked run and took the ball to goal,
eluding one defender, then on an attempt to slot the ball
through the keeper’s legs, the keeper deflected the shot
back to Sean who tried again on a tighter angle,
unsuccessfully. In another attack, forward Anthony Chimienti,
sent a rocketed shot that appeared to go in at first, but
went just over the top of the cage, rebounding quickly off
the football upright to the back of the net, creating the
illusion of a goal. The Knight’s lone goal was initiated out
of midfield by Ozzy Perez when he “dropped a dime” to
Buchanan off on the right side of the penalty box. Buchanan
then chipped the keeper with a delicate finish.
Overall, the Knights out shot Chico 7-3 in the first half
and 4-2 in the second half. Mark Torguson made at least 2
great saves and the Knights forced the Chico keeper to make
7 saves. No player was ejected, however, the whistle blew
several times with a total of 18 stoppages for fouls
resulting in 3 yellow card cautions on Chico and one against
the Knights.
The Knights will spend this week preparing for a two-night
home stint starting with a match against the San Diego Pumas
on Friday followed by Salinas on Saturday. Both games start
at 7 pm at Cosumnes River College.

US Open Cup Qualifying Ends for the
Knights
Bottom line, the Knights played well enough to advance;
however, without a win against Sonoma County Sol, the
Knights will instead take the week to get ready for their
next NPSL home game on Friday, May 27 at CRC versus the
Chico Rooks.
Coach Preble, obviously disappointed that his team didn’t
get the win during the 11 am match against Sonoma, feels
that his squad still has some of the highest quality players
in the league. Sonoma scored 2 goals before the Knight’s
number 6, Vinney Matteoli, finished a rebounded ball in
front of the goal in the 68th minute of play. The Knights
had numerous scoring opportunities and shots, with 2 shots
rebounding off the woodwork for near misses. The game was
hard fought as evidenced by the 31 fouls called during the
game. Sonoma received 2 yellow card cautions, and the
Knights received 3. Some spectators indicated that they came
out to watch this game as it was dubbed the match of the
tournament!
The Knights regrouped for the 5 pm match against the Titanes
and easily topped them with 4 unanswered goals scored by
Alfredo Renteria (2 goals), Jimmy Frazelle and Scott Lucky.
Marco Ramirez, a midfielder from CSUS, assisted on the goal
scored by Frazelle.
Overall for the tournament, the Knights earned 6 points with
wins against the Northern Nevada Aces and the Titanes.
In 2004, the Knights advanced well into Open Cup play;
however, this year, the team will be looking to show well in
the NPSL. They have to wait until 2006 to try again for the
Open Cup.
